The Common English Learning Mistakes You Can't Afford to Make

Excellent English language skills are crucial for success in today's globalized and fast-paced economy, particularly in the tech industry.

Effective communication in English gives professionals an advantage in job interviews and career advancement, while frequent language errors or lack of proficiency can endanger career prospects. A recent survey revealed that 41% of employers view poor language skills as a barrier to promotion, emphasizing the critical significance of English proficiency.

That's why it's essential to hone your English language skills to succeed in the tech industry. In this session, we'll explore common mistakes that hinder career growth and provide actionable strategies to avoid them. By mastering these skills, you can boost your chances of success and take your career to the next level. Don't let language barriers hold you back; you can thrive in today's fast-paced and competitive tech industry with the right skills and mindset.

Preposition Pitfalls: Avoiding Common Mistakes in English Usage

Prepositions express the relationship between nouns or pronouns and other elements in a sentence. Understanding these relationships is crucial for using prepositions correctly.

Have you ever been unsure which preposition to use in a sentence? For example, should you say "at the meeting," "in the meeting," or "on the meeting"?

These choices depend on the context of the sentence and the relationship between the noun and the other elements.

👉 The preposition "in" is used to indicate the location of someone at a particular point in time.

“Halloween is in October” / “His birthday is in January.”

👉 You can use "at" to refer to a specific time or the time of day.

"We will meet at noon"

👉 Use the preposition “on” when referring to something touching the surface of something or with days.

"She has a tattoo on her arm"

📝 "Mastering 'Do' and 'Make': Eliminating Confusion"

English learners often confuse "do" and "make" due to their broad range of applications, as highlighted in a Cambridge Assessment English study. Even native speakers can struggle with this, especially in informal situations.

Nevertheless, there's a fundamental difference in meaning to keep in mind. "Do" emphasizes the action or process of carrying out a task, while "make" highlights the outcome or product created.

For routine activities like homework or washing dishes, use "do." For creating or producing something, like baking a cake or making a plan, use "make." Remembering this difference is easy with our fun game - you can't "do" a meal, but you can "make" it!

There are exceptions, like "make the bed," where you act to make something neat. But generally, use "do" for tasks requiring effort or completion and "make" for creating or producing something.

🤓 "Effect or Affect? Tips for Proper Usage

Effective business writing requires impeccable grammar skills, but adequately using "effect" and "affect" can be challenging. These words have multiple meanings and can be particularly confusing for non-native speakers of English.

Here's a simple guideline to help you remember the difference between the two:

👉 "Effect" is a noun that describes the result of something.

👉 "Affect" is a verb that means to have an impact on something

  • R = Remember

  • A = Affect is a

  • V= Verb

  • E = Effect is a

  • N = Noun

It's crucial to remember that "affect" functions as a verb and indicates the influence of one thing on another, while "effect" functions as a noun and refers to the consequence or result of something.
