Does your New Year's resolution include finding a new job?

If so, you're not alone. A study undergone by Dice found that 52% of their respondents indicated they are likely to switch jobs in the next year (up from 44% last year). On the other hand, in a survey of our candidates, we found that 43% are looking for new opportunities.

New Year, New Me, New Job! Does this sound like you? Good for you. Although job searching can be tricky, you can do a few things to prepare for your quest. Given that job search success is 80% preparation and 20% execution, you'll want to take these steps in 2023.

General Outlook on Industry and Tech Profession

A Dice study found that over one-third of technology professionals feel "very pessimistic" about the economy. Nevertheless, their general outlook is more optimistic; 84% of respondents indicated that they think the tech profession will grow significantly or slightly over the next five years.

As mentioned, 52% of tech professionals will likely switch jobs next year. This increase in technology professionals looking to change careers also represents an excellent opportunity for recruiters and managers looking for new talent. It will likely lead to more openness and an increased response rate from both sides.

What do you NOT want?

A great way to know what you want is to see what you won't accept. Start listing the things you won't take or don't want to do anymore and discard or downplay references of any related skills or achievements in your CV.

Doing this is essential because it will vet job positions that don’t align with your professional future. If you keep them on your CV, you’ll have calls and inquiries for jobs you no longer want. Instead, align your online information and success stories with your desired position.

Be Diligent about new opportunities.

Remember: wait to settle. Sometimes we must do our diligence before starting a new job because we may cloud our judgment if we want one immediately. How can we prevent this? Research, research, and more research. For example, you can investigate the market and connect with current and former employees to ask questions. If you score an interview, prepare and ask the right questions to learn more about their culture and clear expectations of the role.

Know your professional worth

It is essential to learn how to back away from a great offer if it doesn't match your professional development. For this, write down a personal checklist and include everything you are looking for in your ideal job. If, by doing this, you determine that the criteria you are looking for do not match, back away.
