Don't be afraid to turn your camera on.

When working remotely, especially for an international company, it is perfectly normal to believe that opportunities to stand out are scarce, but don't worry, we've got you covered!

If a tree falls, but no one is there to hear it...

You know the rest! This only means that in a remote environment, it is important that the right people know your progress and milestones. Are you having one-on-ones regularly with your leader? Are you individually chatting with your leader and proposing new ideas? Master the art of self-promotion by documenting your achievements, following the structure of a case study:

  • Problem

  • Solution

  • Results (and its impact on the company)

  • Inspiration: your train of thoughts, abilities used (both soft and hard skills)

This doesn't have to be in-depth or take you too much time. This is only for you to be ready to ask for a new challenge or position. When you’re working remotely, visibility equals viability.

What happens when you leave the Zoom call?

Quoting Jeff Bezos: “Your brand is what other people say about you when you’re not in the room.” Or, well, in this case, Zoom. You can't read minds, but certainly, you can notice the impression you leave on the rest with simple actions: they come to you with new ideas, ask you to collaborate on different projects, and engage with you in small talk. Don't be afraid to show your personality, it's the easiest way to break the ice and communicate more empathetically with your team. This will ultimately allow you to build your influence in the workplace.

We can hear you, but can we see you?

It's important that your team learns more about you than just your voice. In fact, not using your camera may put you at a disadvantage. It's the best way to "show up" and put a face to a name. Additionally, it can help others feel more connected to you and give them a chance to know you better personally.Presentation is also important...at least your top half. Look presentable, following your job's etiquette (it varies, just follow along with what other team members are wearing). Avoid eating and other distractions that will make you turn your head away from the camera (P.S: yes, we can notice when you are typing/multitasking). It's all about being mindful. But hey, stuff happens, so don't get anxious if your pet decides that your webcam smells great. Trust us, we all love a pet appearance!
