ESO, Stipends, PTO

Are these words familiar to you? Once your salary expectations are matched, watch out for these benefits, they will tilt the scales in your decision. Here's why

You may believe that since you won't be physically present in the offices when you apply for remote jobs in the United States, Canada, or Europe, your only compensation will be your income. Nowadays, this couldn't be any further from the truth. Our founder, Gino, shares his perspective about the Latin American market: "North American companies have trampled each other, offering better perks, salary, benefits, and equity to LatAm talent. Based on our TECLA research, candidates receive anywhere from 10-15 offers from recruiters every month." You can read the full article here. There is a demand, and with it comes a set of benefits beyond salary. Let's look at some of them so you can make the best decision when you are offered a remote job.

Employee Stock Options

Or popularly called: ESO. These are a benefit often associated with startup companies. The stock options offered come in the form of regular call options and allow employees to purchase their organization’s stocks at a specified price and time.

How do I know if this will benefit me? First, make sure your salary expectations are matched. Since you can't control the stock value once the company goes public, take ESO as a bonus. We have a great video that dives deeper into ESO.

ESO are a plus, make sure you are negotiating your salary to match your expectations.

Stipends

They usually come in the form of education, hardware, and health stipends. It's a non-monetary bonus that positively impacts your well-being and career development. This includes scholarships to study, fully paid seminars, new equipment or remote office refurbishment, gym memberships, access to paid health apps, etc. When you add up your gym, equipment, and school expenses, stipends are a great way to alleviate those costs. It will eventually help you save your income for other aspects of your life.

Paid Time Off

The famous PTO. It is generally used to describe any period that an employee is paid while taking leave from work. It combines an employee's paid sick, personal, and vacation days.Should I keep an eye on this? Yes, especially when you see on the job description "generous PTO." Generous is not a quantity measure, so before accepting the offer, you know the number of days you have off and the length of the PTO periods. Depending on the company, sick days are not counted as PTO or local holidays. We advise asking how the PTO is distributed and what types of leave are included.

Remember to take and enjoy your PTO
