Oh no, massive tech layoffs and hiring freezes...

Is this year finally coming to an end?  We will not downplay the situation; this is a scary and challenging time in Big Tech. In the face of this economic uncertainty, career resilience has become a necessary core professional competency. That’s why we are here, to offer you some advice on navigating the job market’s turn for the worse.

It's speculated that this year alone, almost 67,000 workers in the U.S. tech sector have lost their jobs. We hear news of mass layoffs and hiring freezes from Big Tech companies every day. But, how did we end up here?

  • The imminent threat of a recession caused customers to take care of their piggy banks, and Big Tech companies reported an appalling decrease in earnings.

  • Digital advertisers are cutting back on expenses as rising inflation prevents consumers from spending.

  • The tech world is recalibrating after a long period of outsized growth during the pandemic when people stayed at home and purely relied on technology.

  • Meta has been affected by Apple's iOS privacy update, which limited ad targeting.

  • Unstoppable rising interest rates.

It’s normal to feel discouraged or anxious during these times. But now, more than ever, resilience is one of the most critical attributes a professional must have. Lucky you, we are here to support you and give you some tips on building this strength .

TIP #1: Build an entrepreneurial mindset

No, we don't mean to drop everything and start your dog-walking business (or yes, it's an excellent idea). What we mean by this is to adopt a mindset that reminds you that a career is yours alone to manage. You are responsible for building your career and personal brand as a professional.

Our advice? Become a lifelong learner by continuously investing in your education. It can be a great time to use your educational perks with us; follow along to see all of them.

TIP #2: Try to find positive news

Mainstream news tends to bombard us with not-so-happy news, partly down to media convention. In a practical sense, it’s not wrong to be informed about dangers or conflict. Still, the reality is that most people are left feeling overwhelmed by this onslaught of negativity. We propose to shift your perspective by also consuming a daily dose of good news for a change. Here are some:

  • Tech companies with 5 to 5k employees grew approximately 12% this year during April and October.

  • Many SaaS/B2B companies are still growing and hiring for sales & marketing positions.

  • Big Tech is just late in its market adjustments; it will improve over time.

  • In B2B tech, their headcount is increasing more than its decreasing.

  • Startup founders are eager to recruit new talent since they reckon they would have never found such potent candidates a few years ago.

  • Big companies like Nike, Pinterest, Grammarly, Asana, and more are still hiring for tech.

TIP #3: Focus on your job search

With mass layoffs and hiring freezes, job seekers must narrow their search to companies actively recruiting new employees. Organize your job search to keep track of everything, connect with your network and update your resume and cover letters. Here is a quick reminder to scroll down to our week's hot jobs.

TIP #4: Prioritize your mental health

Last but not least, take care of your mental health. These upcoming weeks can be very challenging, and the unexpected can affect your mental health. Building resilience is essential since it helps you adapt to life's setbacks and adversity.

 QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Don't be afraid to start over again. Remember that this time, you're not starting from scratch. You're starting from experience."

Yes, starting over can be nerve-wracking, but that doesn't mean all your efforts went down the drain. Great things can happen after a mishap in life. Just look at Albert Einstein, Oprah Winfrey, or Michael Jordan.  Mistakes are part of life and can be hard to avoid altogether. But hey, this is not a pessimistic approach; it's a realistic one! Never allow yourself to let them define you. Instead, take them as an opportunity to learn, grow and change. They are not there to be unlearned because starting over means that you're determined to get better, and to do that, you need to grasp wisdom from past experiences. We are forever learning, so trust the process and keep going! You got this.
