What happens when you freeze a rubber band?

It loses its ability to tie a knot. The same happens if you overheat it. Elasticity to the rubber band is emotional flexibility to us.

  1. Understand where it comes from.

The concept of building flexibility and resilience doesn't mean you won't experience life's stresses or difficulties. It means that our ability to adapt and think clearly during difficult situations gives us the mental clarity to make focused decisions (also called embracing change). We still feel stressed, but there is an ownership of the problem. Remember Bruce Banner's iconic words?

  2. It's a muscle.

It is not a quality that only some have while others don't. It is a repetition of behaviors, thoughts, and actions that are practiced and mastered when faced with life's difficulties. Anyone can learn or cultivate this mindset. Think of resilience as a muscle that becomes stronger the more you use it.Small actions you can do as practice:

  • Take a walk during lunch. Fresh air and a different temperature will help you wind down your mind.

  • Do you get frustrated with a new task? Walk away from the computer and into another room. Leaving the physical space is a great starting point for gaining a new perspective.

  • Repeat a simple morning routine. Wake up, stretch, have coffee, and walk the dog. A seeming lack of control and indecisiveness wears on our emotional resilience. You can take control at the very start of your day by managing both with a simple step-by-step routine.

  3. #BewareofSocialMedia

Social media has a reinforcing nature. The possibility of the next big reward (aka finding the funniest TikTok of the day) is what keeps us engaged for long periods of time. We, as humans, are only capable of handling and processing a certain amount of information daily. Swiping for hours leads to exhaustion and depletes your emotional energy, making you more frustrated with everyday tasks. Let's face it, none of us is going to avoid social media, but there are steps to take to limit its impact:

  • Unfollow the people that are no longer in tune with how you see yourself.

  • Don't engage in exhausting online debates (hi, Twitter). It will leave you frustrated and stressed out for the rest of the day.

  • Take those "5-9" routine videos or other productivity-hacking content with a grain of salt. If you are comparing yourself to the creator and feel like a failure, that is a big red flag. These videos are highly curated and mostly scripted.

  4. Kindness goes a long way.

How would you talk to a friend going through a difficult time? Is that the same way you are talking to yourself? Taking breaks, prioritizing sleep, or choosing to work one day from bed because you feel like it, are good ways to show yourself some kindness. What does this have to do with flexibility and resilience? Recharging. It's always best to have a well-rested mind to find solutions. Discarding the pressure with a break is great for perspective, also.
