What do candidates expect in first interviews? 👀
TECLA connects the best tech talent in Latin America with the best remote-ok technology companies in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. If you want to upgrade your career, keep reading!
What are you expecting when first applying for a job?
We asked our community a series of questions to better understand what they are looking for. Keep reading for the results!
1. Which work model do you prefer?
Remote-first. Almost 80% of professionals will go for remote roles. This is not surprising. The pandemic accelerated the growth of remote tech jobs available for international talent, especially in Latin America. The opportunity to learn from a diverse team in leading tech startups is now a tangible reality thanks to the democratization of remote work. Protip: When interviewing for remote jobs, do a walkthrough of what working remotely means for that company. Do employees need to share a common timezone? Is there flexibility with schedules? It's important to know each policy, as every company is different.
2. When applying for a job, are you expecting to negotiate the final salary?
Protip: Provide salary ranges at the beginning, and you can give a final number as you move forward. Remember to take into account other benefits like stipends and health insurance.
3. As a developer, how willing are you to take a coding challenge or test as the first step of the interview process?
Protip: If this an opportunity you are not sure about, talk to the hiring manager, but come prepared. Have your questions ready and make sure the answer is not on their website (let them know you already know who they are).
Each hiring process is different from the next one, but as a collective, most IT professionals have a decisive say on what they expect. It's a great way to feel validated when you ask yourself, "Am I wrong for expecting to negotiate the final salary?". Now you know you are not alone. Remember to participate every Monday in our TECLA polls on our LinkedIn page.
